BACK UP POWER SOLUTIONS

Having a back up power source to operate a home or business during a power outage is becoming more & more of a reality. It used to be that installing a back up generator was the only option, but today there are a lot of options available to us. The most recent is what is called the “hybrid” system, which is a back up power system which you can build and add onto over time. The first thing you would need for a hybrid system is an automatic transfer switch which also operates as a true sign wave inverter. With this device you can then operate a stand by generator or a back up battery pack. You can also operate a solar system or a wind system or a hydro system. The device also operates as a three stage battery charger, and you can sell excess power back to your utility with this device. And, Yes, you can even do all of the above. SIZING & PURCHASING YOUR GENERATOR

When looking to buy a generator you will need to decide on a few things. First of all, you need to decide what your electrical load will be during a power outage. For instance, most homes are equipped with what is called a “200A” (two hundred ampere) Service from the utility. Often we at Mac & Mac are asked if we can supply a generator which can power “the entire home”. A home standby generator with a 200A breaker on it would be about a 50KW generator and would cost you roughly $15 - $20K, so as you can see this is not practical to size a generator to power you “entire home” this way. A good way to size your generator is to look at your electric motor loads first. For instance if you have a well pump or a heat pump on your property, you will need to size your generator a minimum of four times the running amperes of your largest motor load just top be able to start the motor, assuming nothing else is drawing electricity. Once you have done that you need to decide what other appliances you plan to operate during an outage (ie. Microwave, washer & dryer, dishwasher, hot water heater, etc…) Then look at your lighting loads. Simply put, the most common generator we sell for Residential Back up power is the 7KW unit, unless you have a well pump, then you will need to start at around 13KW… then you can go up from there as per your personal energy needs…
